Project 3: Art Gallery, Shop and Apartment

The Drawings

In this building project, I'm trying to emphasize the idea of nature to be inside the art gallery. It is in response to the aboriginal art which is always related to the nature. Thus, i use two posible elements of nature inside the architecture. those are water and green environment.

The speciality of aboriginal art is that its varying from canvas painting to sculptures and rock paintings. Thus, the circulation of my art gallery is that from the first level where there is not a lot of natural light to the most opened area located at the end of the journey, that is the courtyard on level 3, where rock paintings are located standing with a tree.

the main feature of the gallery is the motif from pre casted concrete, water feature. moss on the wall and the courtyard. This building is designed to stand strong just as how aboriginal art has its strong characteristics.

Material that i'm using for the exterior is pre casted concrete with motif shown in the model. It is meant to achieve the simplicity and textured architecture to suit the art work.

Concrete, glass and timber are used for the materials of the interior.

Transition from idea of seperating the gallery into one whole building is that to achieve optimal movement and use of space of the gallery. Furthermore, the idea of moving from enclosed space to the open door affect the decision. With this planning, the sense of moving through the gallery freely can be more successfully achieved.

Aboriginal art is chosen to be displayed in my Gallery. The cosideration is that because Newtown is filled with many different cultures varying in different art shops, schools, restaurant, etc, thus it is strong on cultural imagery when people think about the area. I took this opportunity to promote Aboriginal art that is strong in cultural conceptual and is, furthermore, strong enough to become the iconic artwork in that area. Below is the kind of arts going to be displayed in my Galery.

Paddy Fordham Wainburranga is one of the most known Aboriginal artist in Australia. His art works are strong in its conceptual meaning and are modern. Thus, he is chosen to suite the galery which has concept to be strong in cultural background but is modern.

Site Study: Newtown - King Street

Newtown King Street is a place where art is oviously exposed. There are a lot of art shops with many different cultural backgrounds, such as Budhist accesories store, Indian, Mexican, Spanish, Lebanese, etc. Also, there a several art schools within this area. The main idea that i take from the site is that to build art gallery being the icon in that area.

As all knows, this street is peak especially during the peak hour and the weekend. Thus, I intend to build art gallery wich open till night. The are that I chose from my galery is 9.5 metres wide and 33 metres long. I chose the area that's very close to the bus stop, crossing light and is close to small block as the acess for car parking. This area is facing south west - more to west. Thus, its going to admit quiet a lot of sunlight during the afternoon, which is good as it can be the natural light inside the gallery.

My design materials are basically concrete, timber and glass. In my model I am going to use box board, balsa wood and plastic as materials. They are meant to represent the roughness of atmosphere and design concept that is supportive. Thus, the timber is a visible standing structures.

The Vertical movement is shown in the picture with structural timber supporting the architecture.

The Painting - "Signing Mayflower Compact"

The picture record historical story about compact signed by refuge in the ship in a trip to settle in new place. The compact contains the agreement to support government settling in a new place. 40 out of more than a hundred people signed. They won't know what will happen with their life when they get to the destinantion, but they have to make their decision on the ship.

The painting's atmosphere seem to be rough in the room, crowded, dark and also bright in the area close to the window. Happiness could also be seen in the painting as one person agreed to sign. The roughness of the atmosphere is shown by the structures and stuffs that are spread everywhere.

In regard to this, I take roughness as my deign concept. The design of my architecture will approximately looks like a complicated tower, as they have to make decision and they dont know what they will face in th future (represent their unpredicted future) and supported tower with structural elements to represent their support to the government, those who signed.

The decision that we made to cut the building in ebery level is that to achieve the most optimal understanding of the architecture within every rooms and spaces inside the house. In fact, from building the model we had learnt a lot about the distincitve feature of Muler house, such as the split level of rooms, density of the walls, configuration and the circulation of the house.

The Whole Space

The Broken Long Beam

The Long beam is broken in response to the power of the two characters when both of them reach the bottom place with the elevators. Thus, the broken pieces of the beam is shown with the steel masonry of the concrete protuded out.

The Dinning Table - Meeting Place

The Dinning table is simply designed in the meeting place with high ceiling, huge pillars and luxurious marble floor in order to create the sense of richness.

Carlos Slim's Office

Slim's office is emphasized on vertical movement and created with concept of him being the highest in the strata, since he is one of the richest man in the world though lots of poverty exist in the country where he lives. Moreover, his ofice that's put up high is created to evoke the sense of privacy and exclusivism.

Zhang Yin's Office

Yin's Office is designed to be oriental and emphasized on the horizontal movement with the ceiling that's not high as chinese temple. Circular form is chosen to evoke her characters that's likely to see lots of things in the world. thus, She can see in every direction.

The structure is presented as a whole to show how the two spaces relate to each other.

At the start of the journey, the client is able to look upon the main attraction of these spaces -the ramp, in which its purpose is to allow for the client to forget the painful past.

The trusses and the main supports of these spaces are intentionally exposed on the cliff side in order to show how it structurally stands.

The lit sunken guide line on the ramp is created to lead the clients towards the next space, and in addition assist the clients in forgetting their painful past. Moreover, the distinct and contrasting light colour at the end of the second space portrays the thought of 'reaching the goal'.

The entrance towards the second space is designed to be large as such as the ramp reaches the space. This exposure generates the resolution of finally 'reaching the goal'.

The ramp is created as the meeting point of the two spaces. Moreover the guided line on the ramp helps lead the clients to simply reach the destination, that is the goal, and let go off the first space. that is the past.
